*If you’re new to FXpansion’s excellent BFD3 I really recommend you to read this review from fellow gearslut PassionFlower - it’s a great read with a great assessment of this virtual instrument.
The scope: FXpansion presents a new drum kit for BFD3 and this time it’s aimed at “Americana” genres such as country, rock and blues and everything in between those. Horsepower brings six variations of a kit that can encompass many variations of those music styles, from light and mellow to heavier and powerful. This new kit comes with a “pure” version and two processed variants, and all features both stick and brushes sounds. There are two variations of the kick drum (damped and resonant), two snare tunings (low and high) with on/off strings and interestingly there are “towel” and “paper” versions available for the snare. It also features 3 toms (2 rack toms and a floor tom), one hi-hat (Sabian AA 14), two crashes (Zildjian's 20 A custom and 19 K dark) and a ride (Zildjian 21 A custom). Horsepower also brings a new type of mic called “trash” for lo-fi sound, a side-kit mic that’s very compressed and a FX channel with a colored plate reverb sound. Overall an interesting expansion that extends BFD's range range further.

Excellent as always. Once again FXpansion delivers a great sounding kit to the already excellent BFD expansion roster. It’s an entirely new kit on a entirely new focus so it doesn’t overlap with existing expansions, which is a big plus. Both stick and brush-played kits are expressive, realistic and have a nice character. As always FXpansion went through the depths of the kit and thoroughly sampled a ton of velocity layers and the final result is an extremely realistic drum kit.Ease of use: Horsepower’s presets are pretty much ready to go on a song production if you’re okay with mixing inside BFD, which is not my case on most occasions so I’ll go through the routings and send every channel separately to the DAW, and in that regard the presets are only good for loading a kit since they don’t feature any external routing. Having said that, BFD’s operation is rather intuitive and it doesn’t take a lot of time to learn and master its features. One thing that I particularly enjoyed were the key maps, as I had some sessions from other virtual instruments and I also like to bang a Roland V-Drum from time to time. On both cases it needed little adjustments once the right map was loaded but a few clicks are to be expected on such operations. Also good to note that the kit loading times are very good and the memory footprint is also reasonable (average 1GB per kit). On the other hand the storage space required is not small at 55 GB unpacked, but that's the price to pay for ultimate realism.

Features: For an expansion pack Horsepower delivers a good number of sonic options and furthers the development of the BFD3 platform, covering more and more ground as expansions come out, but this is likely one of the best expansions given the amount of content. The drum kit and new mics are both very interesting and brings some welcome variety. One thing that bugs me a bit about BFD3 is that you can’t fine-tune the “anti-machine gun” option on each drums, having to rely on a global setting instead. On the other hand, the cymbal swell and drum damping controls are spectacular and add an extra layer of realism.
